Basic Burger Instructions:
- Gently combine ground meat with salt and pepper (and any additional seasonings for specialty burgers). Do not overwork the meat.
- Divide into 4 equal portions and form into patties slightly larger than your buns, as they will shrink when cooking.
- Press a slight dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up during cooking.
- Heat a grill, grill pan, or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook burgers for 3-4 minutes per side for medium, or adjust to your preferred doneness.
- If adding cheese, place it on the burger during the last minute of cooking.
- Toast buns lightly if desired.
- Assemble burgers with chosen toppings according to style.
Style-Specific Instructions:
Truffle Mushroom Swiss:
- Sauté mushrooms in butter with garlic and thyme until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
- Drizzle with truffle oil and season with salt and pepper.
- Spread truffle mayo on bun, top burger with Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, and arugula.
Southwest Avocado:
- Mix chipotle mayo.
- Layer burger with pepper jack cheese, sliced avocado, pickled jalapeños, crispy fried onions, and cilantro.
- Spread chipotle mayo on bun and serve with lime wedges.
Blue Cheese Bacon:
- Cook bacon until crisp, drain on paper towels.
- Caramelize onions: cook sliced onions over low heat with a bit of oil for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Layer burger with blue cheese, bacon, caramelized onions, and arugula.
- Drizzle with balsamic glaze and spread mayo on bun.
Mediterranean Lamb:
- Combine lamb with garlic, herbs, and spices before forming patties.
- Cook as directed in basic instructions.
- Spread tzatziki on bun, top burger with feta, cucumber, red onion, olives, and mixed greens.
Notes:
- For best results, bring meat to room temperature before cooking.
- Let burgers rest for 5 minutes after cooking before assembling.
- Substitute ground turkey, chicken, or plant-based alternatives for any of these styles.
- For a lower-carb option, serve as a lettuce wrap or on a bed of greens.
